Niel Ransom
Former CTO, AlcatelVenture Advisor, Focus Ventures
Dr. Ransom has over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Until 2005, he was the worldwide CTO of Alcatel and a member of its governing EXCOM. There he managed central activities encompassing corporate and product strategy, corporate research, R&D investment, M&A strategy and intellectual property. M&A activities included the acquisition of TiMetra, Spatial Communications, eDial, PacketVideo, Thirdspace, iMagicTV, Right Vision, Telera, Aravox, WaterCove, and Native Networks. He held various general management roles at Alcatel including managing Alcatel’s access and metro optical business in North America achieving #1 market share in DSL. At BellSouth he directed an organization responsible for expanding BellSouth’s offerings into PCS wireless, IP, video, and advanced intelligent networks. At Bell Labs he managed an applied research organization that gave birth to a number of highly successful products in data and voice switching including the 5ESS system.
Dr. Ransom has served as a member of the Technological Advisors Council of the U.S. Federal Communication Commission. He is co-author of the book, Broadband Access Technologies, published by McGraw-Hill.
Dr. Ransom holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, BSEE and MSEE degrees from Old Dominion University, and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Dr. Ransom is currently President of Ransomshire Associates, Inc., a company supporting venture capital and early-stage companies in achieving business growth and successful exits. He is serves on the board of AMCC, ECI Telecom, Teknovus and Overture Networks.
